Brief History of Pippa

I am a native of British Columbia and I now live in Fergus Ontario.  I am married to Jay Hambly, who is a well known FEI course designer “I” and an international course builder.

I began coaching when I arrived home in B.C. from England in 1999 by helping friends and family.  I coached from Pre-Training through advanced, while I held a non equestrian job.

In 2003 I moved to Ontario and began my coaching career in earnest. I have many wonderful students who enjoy all sorts of success from winning ribbons to over coming hurdles and achieving personal bests. Some of my more notable students are Ashley Harris of B.C. who competed at the advanced level with her horse “Bailey” and Jessica Ruppell and her wonderful horse “Naughty by Nature”. Jessica  was short listed for the Canadian Eventing Team and winner of the Bromont CIC ** in 2006 amongst many other successes. Courtney Squires and Stephanie Hodge (4th at Wit’s End CCI * 2008) are also past students of note. Currently I am coaching a wonderful group of Jr. and Sr. riders who are all meeting great success in Eventing from Pre-Entry to Preliminary.

Along with my passion for eventing I have, in recent years, begun showing in the Hunters. I was fortunate enough to become one of the Ballard Family’s students. I have lessons from either Erynn or her mother Sandi. Riding in the Hunters has enhanced my knowledge and understanding of rhythm and balance which is the essence of riding cross country.

I have been extremely fortunate to have had some fantastic life experiences which have also proved to be amazing learning opportunities. In 2006 I was able to be part of Andrew Hoy’s team when he won the Rolex Event. It was a wonderful experience to be behind the scenes and submerge myself in that world class atmosphere once again.

In 2008 I was again given a chance of a lifetime. I was able to be involved in the Olympics through my husband Jay Hambly, one of the key builders for David Evans’ building team that was responsible for building the cross country course.  Most riders and coaches do not have the opportunity to hear some of the discussions between the renowned course designer Mike Etherington-Smith and those who were building for him. This allowed me to better understand the questions asked, the shape of the fences and why they are placed where they are. Then of course I was able to watch and learn from the all the great horses and riders who were all in one place at one time. Wow!

Having had these special opportunities has increased my knowledge and further enhanced my coaching skills. I thoroughly enjoy sharing my knowledge and love to see my students excel.
